A little more about
Gloomy Grove
For as long as I remember I've loved being creative and bringing things in my imagination to life. I fell in love with painting in my highschool art class but graduated college with a film degree. I fully intended to go into the film industry but soon found my way back to painting. I began painting oil pieces inspired by film using cinematic wide shots that I took myself and including a corresponding color grid. A lot of my artwork today is influenced by film in which I always incorporate color theory, composition, and storytelling. In fact, the film A Ghost Story has always been a big inspiration for my artwork.
As time went on I kept painting more and more ghosts and started using my primary paint medium - gouache. Its essentially a mix between acrylic and watercolor and has a wonderful matte finish. I occasionally work with other mediums but for now, gouache is my true love. Creating has always been a way for me to explore my emotions without words - something that’s always been hard for me to do. Complex emotions such as anxiety, loss, and sadness are hard to navigate and what a ghost symbolizes. Painting them helps me work through all of these emotions and clear my mind.
I love to incorporate vast landscapes and florals to juxtapose the dark nature of death with something beautiful. I also like to explore houses since they are something we spend a lot of our human life in that contains so many memories and emotions. I am interested in the beautiful architecture of old, victorian homes and the history of memories that are held there. Other things that inspire my artwork are my surroundings, dark academia, the PNW, interesting lighting, fantasy and cozy themes, and of course the nostalgia of Halloween.
